The urge to discover our roots is very strong – to know who our ancestors are often helps us to understand ourselves and our family. It is like doing a jigsaw – each special piece of information discovered, no matter how small – helps to complete a picture of your particular family.
Starting with yourself, obtain all the information you can from your family, especially those older members still living who are a mine of information.
There are many sources for you to explore – family letters, newspaper reports, school records, cemetery records, birth, death & marriage registers, – electoral rolls, shipping lists, obituaries, church records, overseas family history societies, national archives, libraries, UK censuses,
Obtain copies of photos and ask questions about the people in them.
Print out a Family Group Sheet and Pedigree chart ver3 to help you assemble your information. This will enable you to see where you have missing details.
Genealogical Assistance for Members
Our Clan Genealogist is able to give assistance to our members with their research. This is one of the benefits of belonging to the New Zealand Clan Davidson Society. We have a growing database of information about New Zealand Davidsons and Davisons – our objective is to link families together and to assist researchers to discover the missing branches in their family trees. Overseas enquiries are welcome if you are a member of the Society in your own country.
If you are a member and haven’t already given us a copy of your family tree we would really appreciate you sending us a copy to add to our database. No information on living people will ever be given out to others without permission.
Other benefits of being a member is that you can have details of your earliest Davidson ancestor who came to New Zealand and any research queries you may have on our website.
There are many wonderful websites both in New Zealand and overseas which will help you with your research.
It is true that information is easiest to discover if your ancestors are either “famous” or “infamous” but don’t let that stop you from looking!
Check out the website links we have provided for you.
